Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to Canada on December 11 and 12, according to Indian officials. The visit was first flagged by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who said at the UN General Assembly that India had confirmed Modi would come around December, and that he looked forward to hosting him. Carney linked the timing to the G20 summit that Donald Trump will host in Florida on December 14 and 15. The two leaders had earlier pledged to try to conclude a free trade agreement by the time of this year’s G20. Carney says Ottawa is making good progress in the negotiations, and he described the relationship as exceptionally important across people, security and economic ties.

The trip would be Modi’s first since the G7 summit in Kananaskis in June 2025, which Carney attended as host and where the two sides began rebuilding relations. Ties had sunk badly under Carney’s predecessor, Justin Trudeau, over allegations about Sikh separatist violence and the killing of a Khalistani leader on Canadian soil. Trade is modest compared with the size of both economies: goods trade was about 8. 6 billion Canadian dollars in 2024, and services trade was about 14. 3 billion, tilted towards Indian imports.

Education, energy, critical minerals and the large Indian diaspora are expected to feature in talks. Canada is also hunting for new markets as its relations with Washington fray. The Canadian visit would come just days before Modi’s likely engagement at the Miami G20.
