US President Donald Trump used his UN General Assembly address on Tuesday to state he faces a choice between a deal with Iran and destroying its government. He said he must decide whether to allow an agreement or quickly annihilate the Islamic Republic, though he predicted a deal is likely after November’s US midterm elections. Trump repeated that Iran will never get a nuclear weapon and accused it of stalling on reopening the Strait of Hormuz. During the speech, members of the Iranian delegation walked out, while Iran’s president and foreign minister stayed away.
Trump also firmly rejected international supervision of artificial intelligence, calling it a globalist control scheme, and announced the US will now use the term “super intelligence” instead. He dismissed AI safety warnings, comparing them to his derided climate change warnings, contrasting with over 20 other leaders who urged binding AI safety measures. Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged the US and China to open a Cold War-style dialogue on AI risks.
