US President Donald Trump has signed a sweeping sanctions package against Russia over its war in Ukraine. The legislation was sent to the White House following rare bipartisan backing in Congress, marking the first major Ukraine-related bill to pass in more than two years.
The new law targets Russian President Vladimir Putin, senior officials, oligarchs, major banks, and financial institutions, alongside Moscow’s energy and defence sectors and its oil tanker network. It also extends existing sanctions on Iran’s energy and weapons sectors and gives Trump the authority to impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on the five largest buyers of Russian oil and gas, which is expected to heavily impact China and India.
Supporters argue the law will cut off funding for Russia’s war and push for negotiations, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US House Speaker Mike Johnson praising the measure. However, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries opposed it over concerns about rising costs for American households and loopholes in the sanctions, while India stated it remains committed to safeguarding its energy security.
