Karnataka’s Cabinet approved additional official-language status for Tulu in the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. The state allocated about Rs 82 lakh annually for translation, training, and everyday office use, and coastal administrations will implement the change for routine government work. This does not replace Kannada as the state’s principal official language, but adds Tulu for district-level administration.

During the same meeting, the Cabinet floated a draft process to rename Dakshina Kannada as Mangaluru district following public feedback, and gave in-principle approval to upgrade Mangaluru Fisheries College into a fisheries university. Supporters celebrated the Tulu decision and renewed calls to push the language into the Constitution’s Eighth Schedule.
