A United Nations fact-finding mission reported on Thursday that it has reasonable grounds to believe United States forces committed war crimes in two February strikes on civilian sites. The mission focused on an attack on the Shajareh Tayyebeh Primary School in Minab, which Iranian officials stated killed over 150 people, and a strike affecting a sports facility in Lamerd that killed or injured 22 civilians and damaged nearby homes and a school. Experts concluded that the U.S. failed to update targeting databases and acted recklessly despite the risks. U.S. Central Command has previously denied striking Lamerd, and Washington has maintained that its operations follow the law of armed conflict.

Separately, the same report found that Iranian authorities committed crimes against humanity during the crackdown on nationwide protests that began in late December. The mission cited unlawful killings, torture, arbitrary detention, enforced disappearances, and severe curbs on expression as part of a widespread and systematic attack on civilians. It noted that the true death and injury toll is likely far higher than official figures of just over 3,000 killed and 25,000 injured.
