The board of Tata Sons approved a fresh five-year term for Executive Chairman N. Chandrasekaran, extending his leadership beyond his current term ending in February 2027. All directors backed the majority resolution except Noel Tata, who chairs Tata Trusts. The Nomination and Remuneration committee is expected to formally ask Chandrasekaran to reconsider his previous signal that he would not seek reappointment.
The vote follows the Reserve Bank of India’s rejection of Tata Sons’ bid to surrender its core investment company registration, which revived listing pressure. With deregistration blocked, board members see continuity at the top as important for any future public offering. Noel Tata has long opposed a listing and previously withheld support for Chandrasekaran’s renewal amid capital allocation disputes, while the Shapoorji Pallonji Group has favoured a listing path.
Tata Trusts and affiliated trusts control roughly two-thirds of Tata Sons, and the Trusts side has branded the reappointment move legally fraught, creating a governance clash with the operating board. Meanwhile, potential succession candidates that had been floated are now likely paused as Chandrasekaran remains in the chair he has held since 2017.
