The Communist Party of India (Marxist) concluded a three-day extended State committee meeting in Kozhikode on Tuesday with a mid-term overhaul of its Kerala unit following consecutive losses in the 2024 Lok Sabha election, local-body polls, and the 2026 Assembly contest. State secretary MV Govindan retained his post but faced an internal censure over organisational weaknesses and political handling. He stated that his lapses were discussed and that course-correction would be monitored every three months, with a fuller review scheduled after six months.
The reshuffle expanded the State secretariat to about 20 members with the induction of P Jayarajan, V Sivankutty, and MB Rajesh, alongside Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas as a Central Committee invitee. Meanwhile, TP Ramakrishnan and TM Thomas Isaac were removed from the secretariat, and P Rajeeve was named Left Democratic Front convenor. Nine younger leaders and mass-organisation functionaries were added as permanent invitees to the State committee, and Susan Kodi was co-opted back after being previously dropped.
Delegates at the meeting criticized the organization for growing distant from the public mood and lacking room for frank discussion. In response to the party’s collapses, including in its traditional stronghold of Kannur, leadership characterized the changes as the introduction of fresh faces rather than a full restructuring. The meeting also resolved to combat communal politics and fight what it termed a politically motivated Enforcement Directorate drive against Pinarayi Vijayan, his family, and related cases, concluding with a large beach rally in Kozhikode.
