A political controversy has emerged in Tamil Nadu following Assembly remarks about the 1976 Emergency-era detention of DMK leader MK Stalin. While the chief minister denied mocking facial injuries Stalin sustained while jailed, Power Minister CTR Nirmal Kumar claimed Stalin’s arrest may not have been connected to the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA).

These claims contradict the Justice MM Ismail Commission, a government inquiry established in 1977. The commission found that Stalin and other political prisoners held under MISA were beaten in the Central Prison, Madras, on February 1, 1976.

Based on testimonies, hospital records, and a prisoner’s diary, the inquiry concluded that the prison superintendent, jailer, and warders were culpable for the assaults. The report specifically named Stalin among the assaulted DMK leaders, and noted that party treasurer Chittibabu later died from complications linked to the abuse.
