The Tamil Nadu government signed Memoranda of Understanding worth an estimated Rs 12,300 crore in London on Monday, led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. The agreements are expected to create several thousand jobs in sectors such as design, engineering, manufacturing, assembly, and logistics, with companies including Samvardhana Motherson International Limited participating alongside its European and UK joint venture partners.
While the state government defended the trip by pointing to the scale of the agreements, the visit drew criticism from opposition parties. Former chief minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami mocked the visit, and opposition leaders argued that the chief minister’s appearance as a guest of honour at the Silverstone motor racing circuit, where he flagged off a race featuring actor Ajith Kumar, detracted from the trip’s investment-focused purpose.
