A Tamil Nadu government bus operating on the Tenkasi-Tirunelveli route lost control and plunged roughly thirty feet from the road into the Azhutha Kanni river near Vettaikarankulam in Tenkasi district. There were thirty-two passengers on board at the time of the accident, and more than twenty were initially feared trapped inside the overturned vehicle.
Local fire and rescue teams arrived at the site to free passengers from the wreckage. Seventeen passengers sustained injuries and were shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment. The driver suffered severe injuries and was moved to the Tirunelveli Government Medical College Hospital for specialised care, while the remaining injured passengers were taken to Tenkasi Government Hospital to be kept under observation.
Courtallam police have opened an investigation into the circumstances that led to the bus veering off the road. Authorities have not yet detailed the exact cause, though road conditions and driver control are being examined as possible factors. No fatalities were confirmed immediately after the crash.
