A rift has emerged within Bihar’s ruling NDA alliance after the JD(U) publicly opposed the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code in the state. This opposition comes despite a recent announcement by Union Home Minister Amit Shah that all BJP-led states will roll out the code by 2029. A senior JD(U) leader stated that his party remains opposed to the code in Bihar, even though it previously supported the broader legislation in Parliament.

Other NDA allies in Bihar are divided on the issue. The RLM and LJP want to see a detailed draft before taking a position, while the Hindustani Awam Morcha supports the move. Opposition parties have seized on the split, with an RJD spokesperson accusing the BJP of advancing a political agenda against religious minorities, and AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi criticizing the push. BSP chief Mayawati expressed a more measured stance, stating her party does not oppose the UCC in principle but seeks greater clarity on its implementation.
