Telangana’s Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls has caused controversy after data revealed that over 1.52 lakh voters already successfully mapped in four Hyderabad assembly constituencies were reclassified as dead, permanently shifted, or untraceable. This includes 24,449 marked dead, 87,914 listed as permanently shifted, and 40,597 flagged as absent or untraceable. Voters and local activists have questioned how these names, having cleared initial verification, could be dropped into deletion categories without further explanation. Across the wider city, close to 19.4 lakh names have been removed from the rolls, alarming civil society groups who warn that genuine voters could be wrongly struck off before assembly polls.
The Telangana Chief Electoral Officer stated that the revision follows standard door-to-door verification protocols and that anyone wrongly deleted can file a claim for restoration. Meanwhile, opposition parties have demanded a public, constituency-wise breakdown of the deletions and accused the administration of rushing the exercise without adequate field verification. Booth Level Officers have also reportedly struggled to keep pace with the tight timeline. The Election Commission has not commented on the Hyderabad figures, and final rolls will be published after the claims and objections period closes.
