Floods caused by five days of incessant rainfall have affected over 40 lakh people across 14 districts in Bihar, with state disaster management officials specifying that 41.45 lakh residents are impacted across 517 gram panchayats in 84 blocks. Major rivers, including the Ganga, are flowing well above their danger marks, and the Ganga at Sultanganj in Bhagalpur reached 36.78 metres, surpassing its previous record of 36.75 metres from August 2021. Officials stated the flooding resulted from heavy local rainfall combined with intense precipitation in catchment areas across the border in Nepal.
State authorities launched a large relief operation by deploying nearly 1,979 boats, distributing close to 1.94 lakh polythene sheets, and handing out about 29,400 dry ration packets. Relief camps have been established in several affected districts, and the state administration requested additional central assistance for rescue and rehabilitation. Meanwhile, opposition parties questioned the preparedness measures, and health officials expressed concern over waterborne disease outbreaks and drinking water contamination as floodwaters slowly recede.
