A five-storey building housing a boys’ hostel collapsed in the Satya Niketan neighbourhood of New Delhi, killing at least one person and injuring others. Between thirty and forty people were believed to remain trapped in the rubble, and at least two people were reported to be in critical condition in hospital.

Police, fire crews, and teams from India’s national disaster response agency responded to the scene, using earthmovers to clear debris while trying to maintain phone contact with those trapped. Some occupants were already rescued while others called for help from inside the debris, and injured students were carried away on stretchers.

Authorities had not immediately determined the cause of the collapse, and officials had not indicated whether regulatory or safety violations at the building would be investigated after rescue operations conclude.
