India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has asserted that any proposed UN-backed world map must depict Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh strictly according to India’s official map. MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that inaccurate cartographic representations of Indian territory are entirely unacceptable to New Delhi, emphasizing that the country’s position on its territorial integrity and national sovereignty remains non-negotiable.

The statement followed India’s vote in favor of a UN General Assembly resolution titled ‘Correct the Map: Rebalancing Global Cartographic Representation’. Jaiswal clarified that this affirmative vote was based purely on the technical principle of equal-area cartographic proportion—which aims to accurately depict the relative sizes of continental landmasses, particularly Africa—rather than political boundary endorsements. He noted that the resolution neither authenticates specific political maps nor addresses international borders, disputed territories, or place names.
