The president of the Kannan Nalloor panchayat in Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli district died after being struck on the head with a piece of masonry during an argument over a disrupted drinking water supply. The confrontation with a local resident escalated suddenly, resulting in an object being thrown at close range. The panchayat chief was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injury shortly after arrival.
Local police have registered a case and detained a person for questioning as they piece together the precise sequence of events. Authorities are conducting a detailed inquiry to establish a motive and determine if the attack was premeditated or spontaneous. Meanwhile, political leaders across parties have condemned the killing and called for strict action against those responsible, alongside demands for the state to fix chronic water-supply gaps in the district.
