Heavy monsoon rainfall has caused widespread flooding across 23 districts in Uttar Pradesh, displacing tens of thousands of residents and resulting in at least three deaths. The fatalities include an 18-month-old child in Pratapgarh district and two adults in Amroha’s Gajraula area. State authorities report that more than 16,000 people have been moved to safety since the flooding began, with over 3,000 rescued in a single day this week. Among the worst-hit districts are Ayodhya, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Gorakhpur, Barabanki, and Lakhimpur Kheri.
State officials have deployed nearly 1,500 boats and motorboats to reach stranded residents and sent more than a thousand medical teams to treat the injured and prevent disease outbreaks. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered officials to survey the damage and ensure compensation reaches affected families within 24 hours of assessment. Additionally, local administrations have established relief camps providing food, shelter, and clean drinking water, though some remote villages have experienced delays in receiving aid.
Meteorological authorities warn that continued rainfall could worsen the situation in low-lying districts along the Ganga and its tributaries. Officials state that the full toll on lives, livelihoods, crops, property, and livestock will only become clear once floodwaters recede across all affected areas.
