Tension erupted in Bordumsa, Arunachal Pradesh, during a hearing for the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Protesters from local student organizations gathered outside the Additional Deputy Commissioner’s office to object to the inclusion of the Chakma community in the process. The protest escalated into clashes, and firing broke out nearby, though it remains unclear who opened fire or what triggered the shooting. A local students’ union leader also suffered injuries in a machete attack during the unrest.

As a precaution, authorities postponed the scheduled hearing and deployed additional security personnel to the area. Rights groups representing the Chakma and Hajong communities have sought intervention from the National Human Rights Commission, alleging they are being obstructed from participating in the SIR process. Indigenous students’ organizations historically oppose political rights for these groups due to demographic concerns, while courts have previously directed the state to process their citizenship applications. Local officials have not yet announced a revised date for the postponed hearing.
