US Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll has resigned from his post during a Pentagon rift over the handling of the war with Iran. Driscoll reportedly clashed repeatedly with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over the scope and duration of US military operations. While Driscoll pushed for a narrower, more limited campaign, Hegseth favored a more expansive posture.

Driscoll’s departure follows the earlier removal of General Randy George, the Army’s top uniformed officer, with whom Driscoll was closely aligned. Driscoll was also reported to have sympathies with the administration’s more isolationist wing associated with Vice President JD Vance, which has voiced unease about prolonged US military entanglement in the Middle East.

Driscoll’s exit is one of the most senior departures from the Trump administration’s national-security team since the conflict with Iran began. The White House has not detailed who will take over the Army Secretary role on a permanent basis.
