On August 30, the United States conducted a limited, precision strike on Larak Island off Iran’s southern coast to stop Iranian forces from laying naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian state media reported that the action killed and wounded several soldiers without providing an official casualty count.

Hours later, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched a missile and drone assault called Punishment of the Aggressor against two American-linked installations in Jordan: King Hussein Air Base and Muwaffaq Salti Air Base. Iranian officials claimed the strikes destroyed maintenance hangars, technical infrastructure, and aircraft staging areas. Jordanian authorities stated that air defenses intercepted about eight incoming missiles and reported no injuries at either base, while post-strike satellite imagery showed scorched patches and structural damage.

The exchange marks the most serious flare-up between Washington and Tehran since late July, occurring amid a wider conflict that began in February. Although Iran’s president stated the country is not seeking further war, the fighting has kept oil markets on edge with US gasoline prices holding above four dollars a gallon, and Washington has expanded secondary sanctions on Iran’s oil trade.
