Iran says Strait of Hormuz remains closed, no rush to reopen

The Strait of Hormuz remains closed, and Tehran is in no hurry to reopen it, according to Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi. Any vessel passing through the route must do so with the coordination and permission of the Islamic Republic.

Gharibabadi stated that Iranian forces have full oversight of movements in the strait, rejecting claims that vessels were passing through without Tehran’s coordination. He also noted that Iran and Oman reached an understanding regarding passage arrangements.

However, Gharibabadi stressed that this understanding will not automatically take effect and depends on the United States fulfilling its commitments. He added that Washington has halted the implementation of its commitments, and Tehran will take reciprocal steps if the US acts.
