India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri revealed that 51 out of 227 Indian nationals recruited into the Russian armed forces have died. Misri shared the figure in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, noting that the issue remains an active concern for New Delhi.
Most of the affected men were reportedly lured by agents promising support-role jobs like security guards or logistics positions, but were sent to front-line duty instead. Indian authorities stated that recruits were misled about their contracts, and some had their passports and documents withheld upon arrival.
The Indian government continues to press Moscow for the release and repatriation of those still serving. Authorities have also issued advisories warning citizens against unofficial recruitment agents offering high-paying jobs in Russia.
